New Hospital Campus

DeKalb Medical Center Hillandale

Location: Lithonia, Georgia

Date Completed: 2005

Project Cost: $66 million

Construction Cost: $37 million

Architect: CDH Partners

General Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie

The third hospital in the DeKalb Medical Center system opened in July 2005 as the first all-digital hospital in Georgia. The six-story facility includes 100 patient rooms, a 22-bay emergency department, five operating suites, and women and infants services. The existing laboratory and radiology departments were enlarged and renovated to operate more efficiently and effectively, and to handle the increased volumes from hospital patients.

Designed to evoke a warm healing and homelike environment, the interior includes natural stone accents, fireplaces, and bookcases.

The project’s preconstruction services phase serves as a model in terms of positive outcomes created through teamwork, attention to detail, and execution. The project team was able to hold to the original budget despite repeated delays while the hospital awaited State approval. The team’s efforts to review and coordinate the construction documents paid off handsomely in terms of significantly reduced drawing errors and omissions, fewer conflicts with medical equipment, and minimal construction change orders.

"The Hillandale project was the first fully digital hospital to open in Georgia with integrated systems for physician order entry, digital diagnostic imaging, and electronic medical records. Collins Project Management was instrumental in coordinating with the designers, many different vendors, the hospital staff, and the general contractor. Despite all of the challenges, Collins Project Management delivered the project on schedule and below budget. We are extremely pleased with their performance and have since contracted with them to manage a new patient tower on our Decatur campus."
