East Tower & Powerhouse Expansion

Athens Regional Medical Center

Location: Athens, Georgia

Date Completed: 2008

Project Cost: $45 million

Construction Cost: $40 million

Architect: Gresham Smith and Partners

General Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie

The East Tower project includes the complete replacement of the hospital’s Emergency Department, expansion and upgrades to Obstetrics and Family Care Units, and a new Special Care Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Additional covered parking is provided for patients and visitors along with a landscaped plaza at the main entry level. The additions necessitated an expansion of the central powerhouse to accommodate both current and future energy needs.

An extremely tight construction site located adjacent to surgical services created significant challenges for the project team. An enormous amount of logistical planning and careful analysis of potential risks resulted in a well designed and well executed project plan.
